Negative experience: Went into their store for just some brochures and was immediately met with a guy trying to sell us a whole trip. Because we hadn't planned our trip yet we were curious about the options Mark presented us. In the end it rather felt like he was exploiting the fact that we were first time backpackers. He said several times that tours were going quick and that we needed to decide on the day if we wanted to go or not, something that wasn't true, tours could be booked even just a day before some places. He didn't give us all the options, which made us feel like we had to do a 3-day boat trip, when a 1- or 2-day one would've been enough (and cheaper). And we also found out we were put in a more expensive room in a hostel, without knowing there were cheaper options. Obviously, it is on me and my friend too for not researching more, but the way Mark was always insisting on us making a decision quickly made us not think things through, and we ended up with a trip that wasn't really what we expected at all. Next time we will definitely book things ourselves as Happy Travels seem to be very little transparent and way too pushy.

Fantastic experience: Ben really saved us, we came here without a plan and he approached us on the street, we showed him our list of spots where we wanted to go and he improved it, took out bad spots, added new and better ones, the ones that are really worth it. Ben has traveled a lot in Australia himself, all the way up the east coast, so he has good tips and a lot of experience that he shared with us. We planned trips, accommodation, food, etc. with him for the next two months at a fantastic price. If we had booked ourselves, it would have cost us over three times as much. Fantastic experience: My friends and I were initially hesitant to go through an agency, preferring to organize our activities and accommodations ourselves. But we quickly realized it would be expensive, and we might miss out on some of the must-do activities in Airlie Beach. That's when we turned to Happy Travel for advice and recommendations that fit our budget. Mahé took care of everything, and we couldn't have been more thrilled. She speaks several languages, which was incredibly helpful for us. She found activities for every taste: skydiving, a 3-day catamaran cruise to explore the Great Barrier Reef, hiking... We also told her we wanted to party, and she booked us hostels with pool parties, all at affordable prices. We left the agency with stars in our eyes. Positive experience: As we didn’t plan most of our trip in advance it was really helpful to get an overview of all the possibilities of what to do while traveling the east coast. Jamie really took the time and explained everything in detail to us and we had enough time to decide which destinations worked best for us. He also made sure everything fit into our budget and that we would be able to make the most out of our trip even though we didn’t have to much time overall. So far all of the trips and hostels we booked over happy travels went really great and we‘re excited for the ones to come. Also it is really easy to keep an overview and way less work to book it all, as we simply got all the tickets from happy travels and didn’t have to take care about much more ourselves.

Negative experience: Although I ultimately booked here, I would definitely advise against it. Especially if you have not dealt with the market offerings before. I arrived well-prepared because I thought that booking the activities bundled with an agency would make the offer cheaper. Unfortunately, I found that the prices offered for the same hostels through this provider were more expensive in almost all cases than on platforms like Agoda, which is why I preferred to book there. The activities were also significantly more expensive, even though I stressed that I was looking for an inexpensive yet well-rated offer, and I was assured that all providers would be involved. However, I was always only offered one provider for each accommodation and activity. What stood out, in particular, was the quite disillusioning inexperience and ignorance of the employee, who admitted that he had only recently started working there and often had to acknowledge that he could not answer questions. For example, he did not know any of the other common providers for the Fraser Island/K‘gari tour, which must be known to anyone who has googled briefly (Pippies, Dingo‘s). During the trip, I also realized that the recommended (then thankfully booked by myself due to the price difference and therefore partially cancellable) hostels turned out to be party hostels, even though I certainly did not want that at all and had communicated it. I ultimately only booked there because the price was adjusted enough for me to make it financially worthwhile, but only because the prices I had researched beforehand were significantly cheaper. In the end, I was also surprised by a hefty credit card fee of (I believe) 30 AUD during the payment process. The offer is not a bit 'tailored,' as they want to make you believe. Rather, it seems that they want to impose the standard program with standard providers on everyone. For someone who does not want to deal with planning and is also ready to pay a few extra Euros, the offer is certainly acceptable.

Fantastic experience: We were randomly approached by a gentleman in front of the store & that was the best coincidence we've had in Australia so far. Our guide, Mark, planned a beautiful 4-week trip along the East Coast and really put a tremendous amount of effort into it. Since my main credit card (Amex) was not accepted, we initially had trouble with the payment method, but Mark did everything he could to help us. I can only recommend anyone who wants a detail-rich planned trip to ask for Mark here and plan the trip with him. Negative experience: It is a travel agency but only helps to purchase tours from other agencies, so they don't know the details of the tour. The staff takes a long time and attends to 2 people at the same time. The prices are the same as on the internet, even more if you pay with a card because they charge a fee. And online is better because you have the details. I bought 4 tours for Cairns, where they told me that all of them included lunch, and that was not the case.

Negative experience: Toby helped us plan our australia trip and was very informative and helpful, we booked a Whitsundays tour, Great Barrier Reef tour and a greyhound bus pas. We were told that scuba diving in the reef was the same price as just a snorkel and that we may as well book it and we can decide on the day if we wanted to dive. Well it’s now the day and it turns out I can’t dive because of asthma (not happy travels fault, however should be informed of medical reasons before booking), but we’ve found out the introductory dive is actually $84 dollars more than just snorkelling. I’m not frustrated that I can’t scuba but I am frustrated at paying over the odds and we should have been told the truth about the price at the time. Additionally, I think he’s the manager of the place, he kept weighing in to our conversation with Toby. I assume it was to make us feel welcome and to push more tours at us but he came across as quite creepy, especially as he kept insisting he knew and recognised my partner when he definitely didn’t. When we left the shop she actually felt very uncomfortable and avoided walking past for the rest of our time in Sydney.

The highlight of the tour was definitely visiting Fraser Island. The island is truly a natural wonder and I was blown away by its beauty. The guided tour of the island was informative and enjoyable, and I loved seeing all the different types of wildlife. The Great Barrier Reef was also a highlight of the tour. I had always wanted to visit the reef and it did not disappoint. The boat ride to the reef was smooth and the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Fantastic experience: I had the best experience with happy travels on George street. Seated next to the check in desk for the nomads hostel is the travel agency. First of all Eefke the travel agent is the most inviting and friendly person I met in Australia. She helped me book my entire trip. I showed up to Sydney with virtually no plan and she helped me plan coordinate and book everything I wanted to do along the east coast. She suggested things I didn’t know about, helped with gray hound buss planning, and just provided the structure to what is making out to be an awesome trip. Everything I booked was within my budget for my 30 day adventure about $3,000 AUD. And the best part is, her services were absolutely free to me. She wouldn’t even accept a tip which I thought was weird but awesome non the less. Thank you Eefke and thanks happy travels!
