Negative experience: Fantastic Backpacker's Hostel if you are desperate and don't really care about the abusive management wielding their power. Don't plan on staying long!

Fantastic experience: 20 years ago I stayed at Froggs Hollow for 4 months on a working holiday from TASMANIA best experience of my life became friends with the managers Naomi and Martin and started working as cleaner ..office and caring for Tourists on Tours visiting all the out back Kakadu .. Litchfield falls ..fish frenzy..Jumping Croc boat tour ect every weekend.. Cleaning up after backpackers is not a pleasant job as most drink and party but I met some great people from all over the world ..

Negative experience: This place is actual garbage. I'd rather spend my time in the Picadilly motor inn in Wollongong. 1 star is too many. The pillows were sticky. Why? This prison cell room was meant to have two beds. When we told the night clerk, he didn't care at all. We came back during the day and dealt with the manager, Amanda, she's very helpful and friendly.

Negative experience: If i could give zero stars i probably would, i was traumatised to say at least. Sharing the room with stinky homeless people isn't the vibe i was looking for. The smell of old cigarettes mixed with febreeze wasn't inviting either. Im not surprised that someone actually set that place on fire las year, i don't blame him.

Negative experience: Worst hostel I ever had, there's no ladder to get on the top bed, there's no laundry (10 min walk for the closest one), the kitchen is closed between 2:30pm and 5pm (what ? You're hungry? Well, too bad for you...). Everything is dirty : the rooms, the toilets (bring your own toilet paper...), the shower (there's a used bandage in one of a shower for a week now), the pool,... Oh and bring a weapon, because there's always people fighting at night or strangers coming inside the hostel to steal from your room. AVOID THIS PLACE!!! Ps: don't trust the description, there's no free breakfast and the pictures make you think it's clean and friendly but it's not.

Negative experience: After 12 months travel through Latin America and Asia this is the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. Where to begin! The man on reception was very confused and angry when we rang the phone to check in; he seemed confused why we were there?!? The room was disgusting, blood stains, bodily fluids on the mattresses, no sheets or pillows, bed bugs and weird people. Outside there was illegal activities happening. We felt so unsafe we booked a new hostel within 5 minutes of arrival. We woke at sunrise to leave and found a puddle of blood in the bathroom. Do yourself a favour and sleep in the airport if you can’t find a room for the night in Darwin.

Negative experience: We arrived late and didn't have cash for a bond we weren't expecting. We were directed to put the money in a bank account and it would be returned on checkout. The private room we booked didn't lock. At the time of writing, the day manager refused to refund the bond ($50pp for two of us although the sign on reception said $30) because he couldn't get into the account statement to verify we had paid (although I showed him the receipt from my bank app.)

Negative experience: It's not great. There's no cleaning being done thru out property, a really easy fix. However it's this or $300/night for one, so...

Negative experience: Reception closed on arrival and no one answering the phone about 1pm Saturday

Negative experience: We arrived and took one look at the exterior and walked away and cancelled our booking which cost us our deposit, but upon reflection we think we should not have booked this place, even though it was a last minute option. Not to our standard.

Negative experience: The rooms are horrible, but that's not the point at this price. I had a booking and sent an arrival time of 10pm. Got there at 9pm and rang them multiple times. No one came to check me in. So I was stuck in Darwin without a place to sleep.

Negative experience: Where to begin... This place is terrible. I'm not rating it 1 star because it wasn't terrible in every possible way but still, terrible. Pros: It's cheap and the staff were friendly and nice. Also the private room I stayed in was minimalistic but was clean. Conveniently located for the CBD. Cons (in no particular order): It's really dated and dirty (although this did improve slightly towards the end of my stay). I requires paper towels and soap refilling in bathrooms which isn't kept on top of. Ques for check in and out are slow to go down. The place isn't kept secure and exclusive for guests. The locals are nice but some of the locals including local kids come in to use the place including the pool. I wasn't bothered by this as the locals are nice and the kids were entertaining but it does make the place feel unlike a typical hostel. It's poor upkeep and other factors in general make the place feel more sheltered housing than a hostel. Also breakfast is not included for those reading other reviews, maybe it was in the past but not now. The kitchen is dated, poorly kept, no crockery etc. so I ended up eating out instead of there. Also furniture is dated and dirty. No laundry facilities and the nearest laundry mat is a car ride away. No hot water in showers. Some shower and toilets locks don't but to be fair, plenty of capacity for the guests so never had to wait for the toilet or showers. The main problem is crime. This is a bad area. If you Google "Frogshollow hostel news" or similar you will see the tip of the ice berg. While I was there a number of incidents took place. One night someone (not a guest) sneaked into another guest's room, stole her keys and then stole the car from inside the car park, crashing into another car in the way out. Ultimately stuff like this happens because they don't keep the hostel secure for guests, locking gates etc. and the basics. It's The place is near town and better than being on the street but unless everywhere else is fully booked (as was the case for me) you're best off staying anywhere else but here. The other hostels nearby are more party hostels but even if you're not a party animal, get yourself there instead, trust me.

Fantastic experience: Best place to stay in darwin very clean and comfortable safe place

Negative experience: Cancelled our booking less than 24 hours before our arrival!! Completely unprofessional wouldn’t recommend unless you want to be stranded in Darwin with nowhere to stay for your holiday!

Negative experience: Uncomfortable beds, No sheets on bed, No washed pillows, aircon unreliable, bed bugs, room hadn’t been cleaned for at least a month, bodily fluids on bed, rude staff, kitchen rarely open. Rude Homeless people constantly knocking on doors. Never stay here if you come to Darwin.

Fantastic experience: Awesome !! IT all began with fireworks A great place to stay that's cheap and easy . With everything you need so close to town who could ask for more ! THANKS HEAPS GUYS !!!

Negative experience: If i could give a lower rating i would do, bed bugs, shocking organisation, filthy hostel, unhelpful, annoying and rude staff, went through our things and took things when we couldnt pay rent because we were at WORK during the day. Will never go near the place again.

Negative experience: Bro I don’t get why someone would rate this places with 5 stars. This place is so horrible that they should pay you to stay here. Smelly room, understaff, dirty. The guy from reception was nice. If you don’t mind staying in a shxthole come and stay here.

Negative experience: あまり良くないです。かなり汚いですね。ワーキングホステルとかわかりますか？ファーム労働者向けのドミトリーの宿何ですけど、なんだかあれを思い出しました。 廊下にゴミとか着替えとかが散乱してるんですよね。壊れた椅子とか笑 年齢層としては若いヨーロピアンが多めです。ですから治安は悪いですね。お酒のんで騒いだりするのが好きなら良いんじゃないでしょうか。 あと他の方も言われてますがレセプションがやや態度悪いですね。中国人だと思われる若い女性なんですけどあまり話が通じないし親切でもないですね。適当にやってるかんじ。

Negative experience: Checked in after 2pm. Was given sheets, pillows etc.. Went to the dorm. No free beds. Guy in the room seen we were confused and said that himself and his mate were checking out today. Check out was to be 10am at the latest. No organisation whatsoever on the hostels behalf. Had random homeless people strolling around the lobby at night. Didn't keep anything in the room as the door wasn't locked. Ended up destroyed in bed bug bites after our stay there. Place should be seriously refurbished and deep cleaned over and over and over.

Negative experience: This hostel is the worst ever, waiting 3hours to check-in ( from 5:30pm to 8:30) because already the check-in is after 5, never see this before. To finally not be able to open the room with the keys(2 differents keys. The person from the reception is so rude, the rooms are disgusting, probably not clean for days. Definitely not recommend this place!!!

Negative experience: The worst hostel I’ve ever been in my life by far. I have no words to explain how bad it is.

Negative experience: Bunk bed without step to go in! . The hostel is completely unattended... reception only opens at 5pm, and the rest of the time it is without management at all there's! So people get in and steal your stuffs as there's no security at all! Not clean, no hot shower sometimes, and there's no free breakfast!

Negative experience: Full of ants, didn’t get given a sheet, stinky rooms, never cleaned. Full of ex cons. Your stuff goes missing. I’d rather stay in a garbage bin then this hostel! AVOID

Positive experience: Fine just a bit noisy at night

Negative experience: Absolutely terrible experience, would give a 0 star rating if I could. Firstly the place was dirty and dingy, the staff seemed completely lost and check-in took unnecessarily long. When we did get to the dorm room it was absolutely filthy! We had paid for 2 beds but there were no empty lockers (even though we should have had 2) so we had to put our bags on one bed and were going to sleep on the other but when we got back to the room at around 9 someone had taken our bed so we had no where to sleep!! There were no reception staff there by then so we had to go and pay for a different hotel for the night. When we came back the next day to cancel our stay the staff refused to refund the rest of our stay even though they didn't even have the 2 beds we'd booked! Worst service I've ever received and would not recommend anyone stay there.

Negative experience: The place is dirty and stinks everythingis old and it seems like it hasn't been proper cleaned since years. The mattresses are a bad joke. Dodgiest hostel I've ever stayed at after been almost 3 years in Australia. Left after the first night

Negative experience: Place has potential but it's so, so understaffed and the maintenance has been lacking for what looks like 20 years. Staff try their best I guess but it needs a shut down and a proper clean. Hopefully it will happen. Ok for a night or 2 in case of emergency but that's it.

Positive experience: Great price and vibe

Negative experience: There were 2 positives on the nights I stayed... the park over the road and there was a young group of Italian ... and wonderful to hear the mother tongue ..... Negatives were it was unloved and unkept by the owners.... Darwin is a wonderful and beautiful city....

Positive experience: Nice staff, nice place , great location , is not a party hostel and the people is nice , wifi it’s available every where , no laundry, aircon , great value! I would definitely go back ! Some things need to be improved but still good !

Negative experience: It's true, you get what you pay for, but this hostel has a lot of potential and it's sad that is not used properly. Very dirty, toilet that don't work perfectly, old mattress left around make it ugly for the eye. The swimming pool is super nice and the position is perfect as it is closed to everything, but that's it, it could be much more better with more love from the administration. Please remove plastic cutlery from the kitchen, it's bad.

Negative experience: Place really disgusting ( room toilet and shower) for a really expensive place when we come. People who having the hostel don’t do anything for the peaceful of the place. During all night in 1 week, lot of people doing party and putting music everywhere around the hostel and no one said nothing it’s a real mess. I absolutely don’t recommend this hostel.

Fantastic experience: It's the 30th of March and Australia is still in lockdown so no tourists, my dorm room is clean, my bed comfortably and the manager is a great guy, so I've given frogshollow 5 stars because he treats me with respect and I'm offering him mine. I checked in on the 29th

Negative experience: I would have given this place 0 stars but it wasn't an option , nor was my ability to sleep without one eye open , as I don't know what I feared more, getting out alive from Darwin's version of Shutter Island or the fact getting taken by a croc would be far less painful than staying a night in this cesspit.

Positive experience: Typical cheap backpackers accommodation. Friendly staff and lovely locals, a great swimming pool and all amenities - but a bit lacking in vibe - perhaps because it was in the off season, and with Coronavirus restrictions making it less then lovely, but a cheap, comfortable nights stay nonetheless.

Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere, friendly staff, interesting travellers and a cool pool.. Can't go wrong..

Negative experience: It's been 2 weeks now and I haven't received the deposit 30$ back. I checked in on 15th of October and checked out on 16th of October. I told the manager a day before that I would check out early in the morning and she said just leave the key on the reception table. I did that but still didn't get my money back. I've been trying to call the hostel but they didn't respond. How could they do that to customers??

Negative experience: Was really disappointed by this hostel. We arrived and our room was disgusting - it smelt stale and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks - it was also extremely hot and the aircon didn’t work properly, meaning it was absolutely boiling in the evening. The whole place is in need of a deep clean - the fridges stink from gone off food, the communal areas are not clean and the pool area could be lush but the pool is dirty and the surrounding area is too. Reception staff were not very helpful - we arrived and were made to pay $30 for a key card deposit (very steep) and we were told that as a group of three we could only have one key card between us as the hostel was ‘very busy’. My friend pointed out that if we were solo travellers we would have received one each, and we were begrudgingly given another key card (after paying another $30). Biggest positives of this hostel are probably the cheap laundry - $4 to wash and dry your laundry - and free parking on site (if there’s space). Overall, there’s potential but it needs a massive overhaul and a clean to be liveable.

Negative experience: Bad experience - bad service, room not cleaned and wasn't ready (decorated with spider webs), noisy surrounding at late night

Fantastic experience: No ferals and good security.

Positive experience: The place itself has it's pros and cons but luckily the night manager (Michael) was always there to help with an amazing attitude and make the best out of the stay. Ended up staying longer than I expected because of how comfortable I felt there!

Fantastic experience: Wonderful place to stay and refresh your soul ad body. There is lovely park in front of it.

Negative experience: Rooms are air conditioned, free WiFi works. Walking distance to CBD. Guests seem fine. Walking to check the price. You may get a better deal. Reception is pleasant. Must like backpacker life. Laundry/dryer 2$each/load.

They would stand right in front of me with no shirt ,hands behind head ,so you had to see them ..i had to move my chair around or move all together. But the never got the hint , . So nice backpackers nice staff. But omg ,men!! ,we do not want to see your discusting bodys.

Fantastic experience: Best backpackers hostel in Darwin, cool places to chill and meet people inside and outside, possibilities to do accommodations !

Positive experience: Scruffy and basic but, for Australia or for Darwin, cheap. Pool is a bit grubby looking but along the bay is a free lagoon to swim in. Breakfast included in the hostel price. Popular place so I'd say book ahead.

Positive experience: Great location and great people - relaxed, friendly and sociable. Smaller than a lot of hostels you find in Australia so more personable and easier to meet people than in some of the larger, more commercial hostels over here. Michael, the night manager, was great! Very friendly and always willing to go the extra mile to help. I'm already thinking of going back for longer next year!

Fantastic experience: What we love : - It is the cheapest hostel in Darwin - Not a party hostel, you can sleep and rest easily - The swimming pool is nice, kitchen is always kept tidy and clean. Bathrooms as well - People are nice and sociable. It is a great place to meet people when travelling - Double private room are cheap and has everything you need - Great, competent, helpful and smiley Jessica from the reception. We’ve stayed in 2 others hostel in Darwin and the Frogs Hollow was definitely the best value.

Fantastic experience: Early hours of 28 Sept my daughter was turned away from Hotel H on Smith Street, they said she didn't have a booking and to come back at 2pm. She offered to show them her itinerary to prove that she was booked in & paid but the guy told her to "Leave right now" This left her wandering the Darwin city with suitcases etc, by herself. Daughter was (is) on her holidays. I am in Brisbane and I spent the next hour ringing all the hotels and B/Packers and Michael, lovely man that he is contacted me back, I explained what had happened, he was soooo helpful, booked her into Frogs with no hesitation and looked after my girl. She hasn't gone back to the H Hotel and wont be, ever. I, on her behalf can highly recommend Frogs Hollow B.Packers, especially Michael, thank you darling, you are an angel in disguise :)

Negative experience: Not good at all, dirty, full of aboriginal and old people living there like in a pension, the breakfast is a shame and the beds are terribly

Positive experience: It's a great nightclub. So much excitement I barely slept....no seriously I barely slept. DO NOT COME HERE TO sleep except during the day. Probably okay during the day

Negative experience: Absolutely gross (cockroaches and bed bugs), noisy due to continuous parties till 5am, smelly, absolutely not save since the lockers are broken in some rooms, broken beds, the breakfast paid for is just plain toast and spreads I really can't recommend anybody to go there

Fantastic experience: I've been in frogs hollow for at least a month and I can say that is one of the most friendly hostel in Darwin, especially the manager Jessica is very kind and always helpful. Price is definitely worth.

Fantastic experience: I stayed here just for 1night. Wish I stayed for more. The place is lovely for making new friends. Its budget friendly and cosy. Best place to come with friends.

Negative experience: Noisy people of a night time no respect for other guests. The bloke in room 207 or 208 was smoking dope and you could smell that as clear as day breakfast closed off too early. rooms was ok. Shower and toilet block well if you want a cold shower then have a shower there or the shower heads fell on your head they are poorly designed as when you get out of the shower you just about slip over as there are big puddles on the floor. The cleaners well they were rude and was cleaning shower rooms at 9am when everyone wanted to have a shower so was sent downstairs then next thing you know he sends you back hp dtairs as he follows you down to cleans bottom block very rude overall.

Negative experience: Disgusting place. The rooms are smelly, untidy and dirty.

Fantastic experience: Is bacpacker place...short or longterm...$25 AUD a day share room...close to centre of Darwin..free coffe or tea...nice swimmingpool....outdoor area...can meet travellers from anywhere and any age.

Negative experience: Toilet is very dirty and old, rooms are small and don't have spaces for everyone's stuff. and BED BUG!!! Kitchen is small, dirty and if you want to have crokery (spoon, pork, bowl...) you have to deposit 10$ and get refund when you return. How can you keep crockery in your room?? They have some plastic bowl to use but no spoon and pork! Lounge is always messy and smelly Worst hostel ever!

Positive experience: Cheap place, a bit dated but functional. No age restrictions, so there was a bunch of guys in their mid 50s who basically look like their wives had kicked them out hanging around and drinking all the time. When we were checking out a couple of girls were complaining someone had stolen all their underwear off the washing line. Bit of a sketchy place, but not bad if you're on a budget and can handle its quirkiness.

Positive experience: Location is great, short walk to everything but quiet enough and love the Frogshollow Park being across the road. Staff did their job without dramas. Friendly enough. A mix of short, medium and long term tenants. Probably more swayed towards medium term working travellers, so might need to try a little harder to make new friends (I found they were all cool peoples though). I liked the pool area, kitchen standard, wifi rubbish, overall vibe was cool. Not really suited to families... like most it is not exactly spotless, especially the kitchen, but the beds were clean, pool water okay and toilets and showers okay. Overall great value and would recommend it.

Negative experience: Terrible Hostel, unfriendly staff. Dirty smelling rooms, bad atmosphere and the nightmanagers are just looking for a reason to kick pepole out. Left after one night. Never again!!

Positive experience: Vergleichsweise sauber und günstig. Man kann kochen und die Angestellten sind sehr streng was Alkohol und Lautstärke Abends angeht. Daher kein Partyhostel aber ideal wenn man arbeitet.

Negative experience: Staff are rude and arrogant, cleaning is well below standard, beds are very uncomfortable and the bunks have no ladders to get onto top bunks. Pool and spas are not maintained... instead they have a sign saying not to put your head under the water. Wi-Fi is terrible and 200mb is a joke, common kitchen is an absolute pig sty and hasn't seen a propper clean in months possibly years. Fridges are filthy and some do not hold the correct temperature. Bathrooms and toilets are not properly cleaned. Most staff are live in workers and to be quite frank, are grumpy old sods that do not know how to run a backpackers hostel. There is a strict NO GLASS rule which is not mentioned anywhere in the booking sites and an 11pm curfew at which point the staff quite rudely tell you to go over to the park across the road. If you complain about anything at all they tell you to leave and they refuse to give any refunds. The photos of this place on the booking sites and most of the ones on google are from when it was run by previous owners or management and I can assure you that standard has not been maintained. I will never stay here again and I would strongly advise to stay away from here.

Negative experience: Terrible service and reception is only open for certain blocks of time. Reception is incredibly rude.

Fantastic experience: My gf and I paid for a double air con bedroom on the night of Territory Day and it was a pleasent stay. Air con worked perfectly which provided a chilly shelter from the outside heat. The place isn't massive so the size of the shower/toilet was good for the number of guests. Breakfast was provided, cereal, toast, tea, coffee and milk. Tea and coffee all day complimentary. Great chill out area inside and out with sofas/chairs/tables. Swimming pool and jacuzzi as well which is a great perk. Washing machine and tumble dryer for $4 each. Also a clothes line but gets busy. I think there's a few long term residents there. Cleanliness overall was okay. Nothing to deter us from staying there again. Price reasonable, we paid $56 for double air con room but this was before high season I think.
